Music Creation|Composition Course

Introduction to music creation/composition: May 13 – June 17, 2020

The workshop is intended as an introduction for creating music (composition). More than an approach to a specific music style, we will focus on the endeavour of creating music (making conscious most of the unconscious processes that occur during music composition). This approach will let beginners have an understanding and enough bases to start creating music; and the intermediate or advanced rethink their way of approaching music creation, as well as giving them a deeper understanding as well as more resources for composing music.

The workshop will work better if you have a computer with any software of the DAW kind: (Logic, ProTools, Cubase, Garage Band, Live, etc.) and/or for Music Notation (Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, Magic Score, Muse Score).

Both types of software have several free varieties that we can discuss for the course, any software of the kind you feel comfortable with should be enough.

The workshop will not be based on  “Music Theory Language” (and the language used will be explained) to include non-musicians and people with no music theory knowledge too.

The workshop is divided into:

  1. 6 x 2 hour “group” sessions (meaning everyone is online at the same time).
  2. A weekly 20 min one on one session with each workshop member to discuss the week.
  3. Personal work with course material. For each session there will be material in the “Ideas Block” course website including musical examples, books, articles, links to videos etc. about each subject we discuss on group sessions.

Things to cover in the workshop:

Session one will be introductory to the subjects of the course:

On the first session we will try to answer the questions: ¿What is to compose / create music? ¿Which process or processes need to occur in composition and music creation?  We will try to find answers that give new perspectives and that can be applied practically. The idea is to reflect what creating music means in the broad sense, and through this reflection, find practical ideas that would give the inexperienced a good map of what composition means, and the experienced a reminder of several paths not taken through their creating approaches.

The subsequent 5 Will be theoretical/practical, we will first discuss on approaching composition beginning with an idea from each of the “elements of music”. During the session session we will be composing a song/piece together.

  1. Melody
  2. Rhythm
  3. Timbre
  4. Harmony
  5. Texture
