In the framework of “Soundfields” project there will be 3×3 day long free workshops in the Baltic region during autumn 2023 and 2024. During this free education project workshops in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia will provide the wider public with access to specialized knowledge, skills and tools to learn about spatial audio. Participants from different backgrounds with or without any prior knowledge will have the opportunity to meet and learn basic skills, tools and knowledge necessary to understand the field of spatial audio from the chosen experts in the field about particular topics. Project is supported by the Nordplus Horizontal – a cross-sectoral programme supporting innovative projects across traditional categories and sectors, as well as projects that address new, broad and complex challenges. Participation in the programme is open for all institutions and organizations willing to cooperate to develop education within a lifelong learning perspective.
Description:
Spatial sound is increasingly in the imagination of creators and audiences. The concepts of sound and space have a fertile interplay that allows for diverse artistic creations. In this workshop we will follow these ideas through a conversation related to technicalities, artistic practices and pieces, musical and aesthetic considerations and motivations to work with sound in space and with space in sound.

During the workshop “Spaced sound”, we will focus on selected topics about creative work with spatial audio. We will cover the basics of Spatial (3D) audio concepts, tools and techniques and also try to explore a few more advanced topics. We will finish the workshop with a hands-on approach by creating a piece of work using spatial audio.
Goals:
– Offer an theoretical and practical introduction to spatial sound techniques, strategies, hardware
and software; together with artistic methods, including guest presentations.

Program:
Day 1 – Introduction and technicalities
– Sound and space. Artistic and philosophical ideas: An overview of the fundamental concepts of the relationship of sound and space, in acoustic, technological and aesthetic/artistic terms. Review of examples of work and possibilities.
Ambisonics: An introduction and practice on the the most widespread and widely used technique outside of the Dolby sphere.
Binaural audio: An obliged topic on the area, indispensable in the workflow and development of spatial audio. Theory and practice.
Multichannel hardware and software (Interfaces, Dante, etc.). “Why don’t things work?” A discussion on the expectations and reach of the techniques.

Day 2 – Further concepts and alternatives
Impulse responses: What are they, how to create them and use them? Theory and practice.
Max MSP: An introduction and practice on one of the most used tools to process audio and diverse media. Powerful tool that allows to create sounds as much as visuals, and other types of data processing.
Max 4 Live: An spatial audio focused approach to the interaction between Ableton and Max MSP
Other spatialisation and multichannel techniques. (VBAP, ViMiC, Acousmonium, etc)
Sound art, soundscapes and installation work.

Day 3 – Extra tools and Practical work.
Sonification of Data: One of many approaches and starting points to shape the artistic output. We will provide a few tentative ideas from where a sound work could emerge.
Interfaces (i.e. touch OSC): Spatialisation control and strategies.
Seminar and practical work.
