Identity in Collage Workshop
June 27, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
5€The first known example of collage as art occurred in 1772 when Mary Delaney pasted tissue paper onto a black background to create a flower that later grew into a series of 985 botanical mosaics. Since then, collage has been used to push the boundaries of traditional art, act as social and political commentary, prop up counter-culture movements, and most often, simply to entertain through juxtaposing discordant elements.
In connection with their exhibition, “A Wild and Violent Sea,” G.E. Vogt and Lukas Žalalis will lead a collage workshop for those interested in learning more about this unique and highly accessible art form. Vogt, who has been a self-taught collage artist for 15+ years, will focus on the foundational principles of collage: guiding participants through the basics of how to find their own collage style through experimentation and play. Žalalis, an anthropologist and political scientist, will take participants a step further to create critical visual illustrations of their attitudes to political and social events through a methodology based on character creation and archetype trait mixing, as created by Zukhra Yanikova.
All are welcome, as this workshop is designed for all levels of experience. Materials will be provided but it is recommended you bring a few magazines or paper sources if possible to contribute to a larger selection of collage material. Space is limited so reservations recommended but not required; walk-ins welcome! We look forward to tearing things up with you!
