Intaglio print by Sébastien Theraulaz

What is Intaglio Print?
Intaglio printing is the opposite of relief printing, in that the printing is done from ink that is below the surface of the plate. The design is cut, scratched, or etched into the printing surface or plate, which can be copper, zinc, aluminum, magnesium, plastics, or even coated paper.

About the author:

After a short stint at the Université de Lausanne in his native Switzerland, Théraulaz enrolled in the Art Center College of Design (Europe), later completing his studies at their campus in Pasadena, California. In 1997 he set up shop in Montreal and quickly found work with TV productions for a host of different advertising agencies.

The growing demand for contracts led him to found Sub Communications, a design oriented agency in 1999. His versatility as a designer director has made the company a prized resource in Montreals media community. The agency typographic branch (Subtitude foundry) was then founded to developp self-initiated projects such as fonts, illustrations and memorabilia.
After more than 10 years of commercial work, he moved back to his native country. Since then, he focuses on artistic projects and teaching at Ecole Romande de Communications (Eracom).

In 2017, he established his atelier : the Offizielles Büro de l’Image, in the small village of Cully.
